Pipecon

Pipecon Pty Ltd is a direct result of one man’s vision coming to fruition, with its origins starting back in the late 1980’s. Andrew and Maria Mahar, the founders of Pipecon began to work for the Ballarat Water Board in the late 1980’s as a backhoe operator within the maintenance department. After several years’ experience, and various promotions, Andrew became leading hand within his division, and then moved on to become a supervisor within the construction department. In this time Andrew gained, through training and experience, second to none knowledge on the installation and maintenance of pipeline work.

In 1993 Andrew left the Water Board and purchased a 1985 Case backhoe with a vision of starting his own business, trading as Andrew Mahar Excavations. He began operating the backhoe on an hourly hire basis, conducting various duties from house foundations, drainage works, and freeway construction. With the arrival of Compulsory Competitive Tendering a couple of years later, the opportunity arose for Andrew to tender for some pipeline construction works through the newly formed Central Highlands Water. Through Andrew’s extensive background in pipe work, he was able to successfully win a large number of tenders and became a preferred contractor on the CHW’s preferred contractor list. The need to employ extra staff became evident as the business grew, as well as the need for extra plant and equipment.

In 1999 Andrew Mahar Excavations became Pipecon Pty Ltd with Andrew as director of the company. Now specializing in civil construction, the majority of Pipecon’s work comes from winning tenders, through Government bodies, including the Ballarat City Council and Central Highlands Water as well as subcontracting for developers.

The company now has over 30 employees and is now undertaking large scale sewer and water infrastructure projects as well as diversifying into being capable of handling all types of civil construction projects.

Quest Ballarat

Sandy (a nurse) and Andrew (a tradesman) were both seeking a career change and seized the opportunity to enter the hospitality industry through the establishment of Quest Ballarat Mews.

Quest Ballarat Mews 603-605 Main Road Ballarat was the first Quest franchisee purchased by Sandy and Andrew Hoffman in June 2005.

After ‘completing their apprenticeship’ with Quest Ballarat Mews, their vision was to secure a second property. They weren’t to wait long. The opportunity arose in 2007 when Andrew sourced land and Quest became involved to establish the second Quest property in Ballarat.

Three years later in August 2010 their second property (previously known as Loreto College) emerged – Quest Ballarat Serviced Apartments in 7 Dawson Street North Ballarat.

This complex is 4 ½ stars (only the third 4 ½ star accommodation property in Ballarat) and comprises of 55 apartments made up of Studio, 1 Bedroom and 2 Bedroom Apartments.

Quest Ballarat Serviced Apartments cater for conferencing for up to 50 people; has a fully equipped gymnasium included on site and currently employs 20 staff to accommodate guests’ needs. This accommodation property is the newest in Ballarat and has had enjoyed a very fruitful opening and subsequent patronage.
